A glittering yellow-brick addition to Waterview, Kōanga is Ockham-Marutūāhu’s fifth collaboration.

Exclusively built-to-rent, Kōanga offers 37 thoughtfully designed apartments with four ground-floor retail spaces, including a café. Residents share a garden replete with citrus trees, a pool and a sun-drenched communal area to congregate and shoot the breeze.

The building takes its form from a woven kete (basket) — an interplay of curved balconies, textured brickwork, and precast concrete panels inspired by the tukutuku panels of Hotunui, the whare Runanga at Auckland War Memorial Museum. The sunny colour palette is drawn from dried pingao, a native sand dune plant beloved by weavers for adding golden patterning highlights.

A mere 6.5km from the CBD, Koanga sits on multiple bus routes, and is handy to a meandering  bike path that runs parallel to Oakley Creek, as well as one of the best-kitted-out kid’s parks in the supercity, complete with water cannons, play equipment, a basketball court, BMX and skateboard ramps.
