Introduction

Grey Lynn is a prime residential suburb of Auckland City, located approximately three kilometres to the west of the city centre.

The surrounding suburbs of Ponsonby, Herne Bay, Westmere and Arch Hill complement this unique location. Built on and around the natural ridges encasing Grey Lynn Park the original subdivision of some 3.6 km2 still represents the formal confines of Grey Lynn. The park was not originally a part of the formal subdivision, as the land was too steep and wet for house construction. In 1914 the land was drained and leveled for playing fields and is home to the annual Grey Lynn Festival, which attracts over 100,000 visitors each November.

Most of the houses were built between 1880 and 1920. Very few of these houses have been completely replaced by new structures. In the 1990’s Grey Lynn experienced a level of gentrification, with many of the character villas being renovated and corporate projects gradually updating retail areas. As a result of this we have seen housing prices and rents notably increase.

Williamson Avenue and Crummer Road are two of the major streets in Grey Lynn, with Ponsonby Road at one end and Grey Lynn Shops at the other. James Williamson and Thomas Crummer were joint owners of a farm in the area. In 1883 Williamson and Crummer sold the property to the Auckland Agricultural Company. The Surrey Hills farm was subdivided into 272 building sections to form the neighbourhood between Surrey Crescent and the southern end of Ponsonby Road.

Today there is a strong sense of community and the locals have immense pride and respect for their neighbourhood. They have a love for the history, this is evident in the character of the area being cherished, the beautiful tree lined streets and individuality expressed through the boutique shopping hubs, all making it a vibrant and sociable place to live.
